Meet the Mayor

Mayor Phil Powell is a life long resident of Centre, AL. He is married to the former Frankie Smith of Ft. Payne, AL. They have one son, Clay Phillip Powell, JR. He is the son of the late Dr. & Mrs. W.H. Powell. Dr. Powell practiced denistry in Centre for 54 years and served as Mayor of Centre for 16 years. Phil graduated from Cherokee County High School where he made all state in football. He attended Samford University in Birmingham, AL, which is formerly known as Howard College. He graduated from Jacksonville State University, where he met his wife of 49 years, with a BS degree in Chemistry and a minor in Biology. He played football at both schools. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1953 to 1955. He also played football at Ft. Rutcker, AL and Ft. Benning, GA. After being employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Gadsden, AL for 32 years, he retired in October of 1995. In 1996 he was elected Mayor of Centre. Most of his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman, but now golf is his main pastime. Phil is a member of the Cherokee Chamber of Commererce and served as President in 1982-83. He is an active member of the Rotary Club and pastpresent, Lions Club of Centre. He is serving on the Civic Center Committee and member of the DeKalb/Cherokee Gas Board. He also participates in the annual Taste of Cherokee.
